The Rule of Cats
A friend of mine has a very assertive, personality-filled cat. I love him, and each time I see him or even a photo or a story about him I feel the urge to get a cat. Which is not a good idea, as I’m allergic.
That hasn’t stopped me in the past, when I took in my beloved old Harrie-cat, who was a tiny feral kitten, destined to be drowned. She lived to 20, and in her lifetime tamed and trained two dogs.
But these days I’m trying to be more sensible. Besides, this cat is a highly bred cat and it would cost a few hundred dollars to buy a kitten, and I can’t justify that when I know there are so many cats in shelters. My friend, Mary Jo Putney regularly adopts elderly cats from shelters and gives them a good last few years of life, but I don’t think I could do that. Losing a cat every few years would be so hard. So I try to stay sensible and enjoy my friends’ cats.
In the photo, my friend was arranging fabrics and the cat clearly disapproved of her wasting time on such a frivolous activity when there was a Cat in Need of Attention.
It is evident that this particular cat should be recognized as a priority. But, that is probably true of every cat. I no longer have a cat, but the ones I have lived with have made my life much more interesting and enjoyable. Thanks for the post and the picture.
Annette, the cat would certainly agree with you about being everyones #1 priority. I would love to have another cat, but as well as my allergies, here we have to keep cats indoors all the time, and knowing how they love trees and the outdoors, well, it makes me hesitate.
