Spring
Unlike my old garden, my current garden is a native garden, and Australian plants don’t do a big burst of spring the way many plants from Europe and North America do. Later in the year I will have banksia flowers and proteas, but right now there’s not a lot of flowers. And I do like to have flowers in the house when I can. So I grab a bit of spring perfume and brightness where I can.
This is a pretty scrappy little bunch, made up of some jasmine that’s spilling over from the neighbor’s fence, some dark red pelargonium flowers that I’m growing in a pot — I love those dark red velvety petals — and a few sprigs of white spirea that is also in a pot. I grew it from a cutting from a friend’s garden.
The vase is one I bought years ago when I was in Greece. I loved that design, and bought several vases in the same design — a couple of very small ones, (one of which is in the hall, holding several small sprigs of jasmine), this one, which is about 5 inches high, a big one on the left that’s about 18 inches tall and a gorgeous plate (see below). I was pretty impressed with myself getting them (and more) home to Australia, all in one piece and I love them now just as much as when I first bought them. I’d given the big vase to Mum, and she loved it too, but after she died it came back to me.
Only the jasmine has perfume, but I love it. I have another small vase in the hall near the front door and every time I pass one of these vases I get a whiff of gorgeous perfume. So scrappy my little collection might be, but the perfume makes up for that.

My roses are about to explode into flower but I have had Rose through the winter from the lovely winter flowering Lorraine Lee
She has given me great during the cold months, I can see her from my kitchen window
Also to control weeds are planted some violets
Now I have violets everywhere and struggle to contain them, but they went to perfume comes in burst as you walk past the bed
Sometimes I think the garden controls me, but I love it
Merrilyn, it’s a balancing act on who controls the garden and whether it controls us, I agree. But I wouldn’t be without a garden — even if it’s just a collection of pots on a balcony. And I love Lorraine Lee roses. I had one in the front garden in my old house, and I miss it. And violets — such a beautiful scent. And isn’t it lovely when you share garden love with friends?
