A Kurrajong Ornament

Regular readers of this blog might recall that I like making Christmas ornaments from natural materials. Today, as well as some home-made yummies —I gave her Christmas Crack — my neighbor gave me this little bird that she’d made from a kurrajong seed pod.  

The kurrajong is a native tree and these pods fill with seeds , which burst out and then the empty pods drop to the ground. So she picked up a pile of empty seedpods, which already look a bit birdlike, and turned them into ornaments. She stuffed the seed cavity with cotton wool balls that she’d sprayed red, then added in wings and eyes with a chalk pen.

And here it is, a little Christmas robin. Cute, eh?
