A grumpy rant
My old computer is starting to fail — it still works fine, but more and more websites won’t talk to it, so I bit the bullet and bought a new one.
I don’t understand the people who eagerly snatch up the latest phone or a computer or what. I plan on hanging on to my phone as long as I can.
I hate adjusting to a new computer. It’s the same brand, but each time they make a new one they tinker with it, so all sorts of things that worked perfectly before are now different. Notice I said different’ — NOT ‘better”. They’ve made all sorts of little tweaks to catch you (me) unawares.
As well, when I try to log into some sites on the new computer, my login passwords don’t work — even though I have them all noted down in a little book. So I have to go through the rigmarole of changing my password! (The photo above isn’t me, of course, it’s by Elisa Ventur on Unsplash )
And as for transferring my files from the old to the new computer — they’ve made it much more inconvenient because now there isn’t a USB port on the new computer. Apparently I have to buy a special connector for that kind of thing — only nobody mentioned that when I bought the new computer. In the meantime, I have to either email myself the files, or go through dropbox — only dropbox on the new computer doesn’t like talking to dropbox on the old one!
Adding to that, it’s the first day of my new on-line writing course, and I’m trying to use the new computer for it, and I’m also trying to upload the files to get my Scottish story ready to go on sale. Last time I self published it was all so easy. This time . . . grrrr! But I’ll get there. Eventually. Without strangling anyone or throwing a computer across the room.
I feel your pain. Had to do the same thing, upgrade, and it’s hard. Improved? Mainly different. Speed is better but a high price to pay for faster searches…
Yes, definitely different rather than better. And some speeds are faster, but others are more unwieldy. To quit some programs I can’t just press command and Q, I have to then hold it down for a second. Irritating.
I don’t mean to laugh, but welcome to the club. Stay strong and get a computer geek to come and transfer all your files (who will probably be able to iron out a few quirks). Hang in there and get that book out to us. Dying for Anne Gracie fix. Kind regards, Christine
Thanks Christine. I did manage to get the book out, and am determined I will conquer this new computer without calling in any geeks.
We shall see.
Yes! I had to get a new phone and it was seriously traumatic. I am in the U.S. and we have Best Buy and the “Geek Squad” who are marvelous tech folks, very kind, very helpful, VERY YOUNG!, who do all the magic for me, without making me feel like a fool. I’m sure you have something similar. No use torturing yourself when you have so many things to do. Hope it all works out soon.
Thanks Jeanette. The trouble is, my difficulties are with little things, not severe enough to call in a geek squad.
And some of it is just plain irritation that they’ve “fixed” things that didn’t need fixing.
Of course we all know that computers and all the other stuff is designed to make us crazy….it has not been that long since I dealt with a new computer. And that was tipping me even nearer the edge of madness. I try to do backups and saving and all that stuff, but I still lost some things. It is harder than child birth, well maybe not that bad, but really bad. All this talk about AI is simply a warning to us, they are coming to get me.
LOL, Annette, but I refuse to become a slave to them. I keep battling on — and the dog doesn’t mind if I swear a bit!
