A Faint Waft of Spring
We’re still in winter here in Melbourne, but in the last week my neighbor’s jasmine has begun to flower.
I love fragrant flowers and jasmine is one of my favorites, so I picked a few sprigs and popped them in a vase in my bedroom.
And every time I walk in, I can smell the jasmine and it always makes me smile, knowing sprintgime is coming.
I love the changing of the seasons. I’ve never wanted to live in the tropics, where they usually have only two seasons — wet and dry. I don’t care how gloomy and cold and wet it gets here in winter, I know it will eventually change.
And it is. The change has started.
Do you have a favorite sign of the changing seasons? What’s happening in your neck of the woods?
After a really hot dry summer the very top of the trees are beginning to turn and I am seeing fallen leaves in the road gutters. Everyone says Autumn is September, but if you look closely it does start in August. The crops are mostly in already. And it is much cooler today, we had rain at the weekend and grass is beginning to turn green again here.

I love the smell of Jasmine too, knowing the warmth and longer days are on their way at last….we married in September and I had jasmine in my bouquet so its smell reminds me of such happy times.
I seem to have passed the love of it on to my daughter: it was the first plant that she planted in her new home when she moved back to Adelaide ,to help her feel at home!
I think jasmine in a wedding bouquet sounds lovely. My oldest sister had frangipani (plumeria in the USA) in her wedding bouquet and I’d never smelled it before — doesn’t grow in my district — and instantly fell in love with it. I love plants that make you feel at home.
I live on the central coast of Oregon. Our seasons are not too noticeable as we are 50-60º 3/4th of the year and 40-50º in the winter. We don’t get much rain in the summer; just fog at times. Most of your rain is in the Winter and Spring. I love the mild temps we have here. I also love the smell of jasmine. Wish I had a plant in my yard.
Thanks, Jean. It sounds like you have quite a comfortable climate. Interesting that you get fog in summer — here summer is so dry that we hardly ever see any. I gather you can’t grow jasmine — wish I could send you a “smell-o-gram” <g>
