Please note, this is not a "best of" list — it's a few of my personal favourites, books I reread. There are many wonderful writers not listed here. The list is not intended to be a who's who of romance but to start readers new to genre romance on a reading journey. Each section is grouped in no particular order.

Historical Romance by writers of the past
Jane Austen: yes, of course she's romance, as well as literary
Georgette Heyer: try Venetia, The Grand Sophy, Devil's Cub, The Uknown Ajax

Historical Romance by current writers
Eva Ibbotson: English writer. Try Magic Flutes or The Morning Gift
Laura Kinsale:

Eva Ibbotson: Look for her romances in libraries. She also writes kids' books.

Australian Romance Authors who have won the RITA award:
The RITA Award is the romance writers' Oscar. Thousands of entries are made from all over the English-speaking world. Only three Australians have ever won it. They are:
