POPULAR ROMANCE
Workshop
at the Victorian Writers' Centre
Melbourne, Australia
When:
Saturday 28 September, 10am - 4pm
Where: RMIT Dept of Creative Media, Building 94, 23-27 Cardigan Street,
Carlton
Cost: $80, Vic. Writing Centre Members $50/45
Workshop: Romance is character-driven genre fiction and accounts for the
largest chunk of the fiction market. This one-day intensive workshop is
for those who have attempted some romance-writing (or at least popular
fiction), who have read a variety of current romance novels and who wish
to be published.
Learn
what makes romance popular and enduring, what's involved in writing romance,
and what the publishers are looking for.
Workshop story premises with a view to getting the most out of conflict
-- the spiralling thread of tension. Do writing exercises to build memorable
characters. Learn the importance of "emotional punch" and do
writing exercises to learn to incorporate it into your writing - through
plot, through character motivation and through writing techniques. Examine
how skilled romance writers create characters with strong reader appeal.
Activities will involve analysis of extracts, discussion, writing exercises
and workshopping of ideas. The emphasis will be on practical writing activities
in a supportive environment.
